What it costs to feed one cat for a month

A 4 kg adult indoor cat eats roughly 50–60 g of dry food a day — about 1.7 kg a month. Kittens, big breeds and active cats eat more; always start from the feeding guide on the bag.

How to read a cat food label (in 30 seconds)

  • Protein (min.) — for adult dry food, 30% or more is good. Cats are carnivores; protein from meat or fish matters more than the number alone.
  • First ingredient — should be a meat or fish. "Chicken" or "dehydrated chicken protein" is better than an unnamed "animal protein".
  • Fat (min.) — 12–20% for most adult cats. Higher fat means more calories per gram, so you feed a little less.
  • Grains high on the list — corn, wheat and rice are fillers that keep prices down. Not dangerous for most cats, but they mean less meat per bite.
  • Taurine — must be there. Cats can't make enough of it; a shortage damages the heart and eyes.
  • Wet vs dry — wet food is ~75–80% water, so its protein % looks low. Don't compare a wet label with a dry one directly.

Brand by brand: the honest verdict

  • Josera Catelux (Germany) — the richest label here (32% protein, 20% fat), gluten-free, duck and potato. Owners on zooplus rate it 4.8/5 across 264 reviews, often saying it won over picky eaters and cut hairballs. The main complaint is a kibble shape small-mouthed cats find awkward.
  • Royal Canin (France) — the most expensive per kg and the most consistent. Fit 32 is a sound but ordinary label; the value is in its breed and medical diets (urinary, gastro, Persian). Owners on zooplus mostly praise it; complaints are about bags not resealing, a kibble-size change, and grains.
  • Reflex and Reflex Plus (Turkey) — 32–33% protein at mid-range prices, and the brand Pakistani owners recommend to each other most often when money is tight. Critics point to corn and rice high on the ingredient list and processed rather than fresh chicken. Owners who can stretch prefer Reflex Plus to plain Reflex.
  • Mera Exklusiv Classic (Germany) — 32% protein, 14.5% fat, and a favourite in owner threads. Worth knowing: this line lists cereals before meat, while Mera's Finest Fit line (also stocked, from Rs 2,000/kg) leads with poultry protein.
  • Bonnie (Turkey) — searches for Bonnie are up almost 40× in three months. 31% protein and 12% fat with wheat and corn as the next ingredients: a middle-of-the-road food priced close to Reflex Plus per kg.
  • Nourvet Gold (Pakistan) — the surprise on paper: fish protein first, at least 32% protein and up to 19% fat, at a fraction of the imported price. Owners are split — some report a trouble-free year on a vet's recommendation, others rate it barely above the cheapest brands. Watch how your own cat does on it.
  • Pawfect (Pakistan, Lahore) — cheap and widely stocked. 30% protein is fine, but 9% fat is the lowest here and soya features heavily. It takes criticism in owner threads, usually named alongside Fluffy.
  • Mr Pet — the lowest protein on the list at 25%. Priced like Bonnie per kg for less protein, so it's hard to recommend over the others.
  • Fluffy (Pakistan) — the cheapest per kg by far. The ingredient list (fish powder, chicken meal, then soy, corn, rice and wheat) is published, but we couldn't find a protein or fat figure from the brand. It also takes the harshest criticism in Pakistani owner threads. A budget option at best — ask the seller for the analysis, and watch stool, coat and litter-tray habits closely.

Also rising in searches: Maybel Elite, Me-O and NutraGold. Maybel Elite is a Pakistani wet food, so it doesn't belong in a dry-food price table — and we couldn't find a published analysis for it. Me-O (Thailand) and NutraGold (a Diamond Pet Foods line from the USA) aren't in our catalog yet; message us if you want them.

What Pakistani cat owners actually say

Retailer pages repeat the brand's own claims, so we read what owners tell each other instead — three long threads on r/pakistan(linked in the sources), plus owner reviews on zooplus. These are opinions from pet owners, not clinical evidence. Here is where they agree, and where they don't.

  • Reflex is the consensus "affordable and safe" pick. It comes up in every thread as what to buy when imported premium food is out of reach, with several owners specifying Reflex Plus over plain Reflex.
  • Josera is the quality favourite — owners reach for it for senior cats or cats with liver, kidney or stomach problems, and one switched to it from Royal Canin on price.
  • Mera (German) is the recommended middle option, with owners preferring the Finest Fit line to Exklusiv Classic. The labels back that instinct: Exklusiv Classic lists cereals first, while Finest Fit leads with poultry protein.
  • The cheapest local brands are where owners get angry. Fluffy and Me-O draw the harshest comments, including owners who believe the food made their cat ill — one described heavy panting that stopped after switching, another a cat's urination problems settling on a different food.
  • Nourvet splits the room. One owner says their vet recommended it and their cats ate it for a year with no trouble; another rates it only slightly above the cheapest brands. Pawfect draws similar criticism.
  • Several owners say their own vets discourage local brands, usually citing urinary problems — while other owners feed them without issue. Both are anecdotes, not studies.
  • Experienced owners argue dry food alone isn't enough, because cats drink too little on their own. Their fix: wet food, or boiled boneless chicken in plain yakhni — no salt, no spices, no bones — alongside kibble.
  • What it costs, in owners' words: one budgeted roughly Rs 5,000 a month for one kitten's food, litter and wet food; another watched a Reflex bill climb from about Rs 1,400 to Rs 4,000 a month in four years.

Owner ratings on the imported brands agree with the threads: Josera Catelux holds 4.8/5 from 264 reviews on zooplus, and Royal Canin Fit 32 about 4/5. The sharpest criticism of Reflex we found is on TheCatSite forum, where a member objected to its grain-heavy recipe.

A vet's note, in fairness to the local brands. No Pakistani cat food has been recalled or shown in published research to cause disease, and single stories online cannot prove a food caused an illness. What is established: cats on dry-only diets drink too little, and urinary disease (FLUTD) is more common in male, overweight, indoor cats. So the fair reading is not "brand X poisons cats" — it is: pick a complete food with a named meat first, add moisture, keep bags sealed and in date, and get any straining, blood in the urine or repeated litter-tray visits seen the same day. In a male cat that is an emergency. Full disclosure: MatchVet sells several brands on this page, including ones owners criticise. We have left the criticism in.

Other brands owners name that we stock: Mera (Finest Fit from Rs 2,000/kg), Bonacibo, Happy Cat, Brit, Whiskas, and Purrs wet food. Owners also mention Nutra Gold, Taste of the Wild and Farmina N&D — message us if you want something we don't list.

How to save on cat food in Pakistan

  1. Stop paying for delivery. Most shops charge around Rs 200per delivery. MatchVet subscribers in Lahore pay nothing for delivery — that's Rs 2,400 a year on a monthly plan, or Rs 5,200 on a two-weekly one. See how the subscription works.
  2. Buy the bigger bag of the same food. The per-kg price drops sharply:
How much bigger cat food bags save per kg
FoodSmall bag per kgBig bag per kgYou save
    Nourvet NaturalRs 1,300 (0.5 Kg)Rs 1,000 (10 Kg)23%
    Royal Canin IndoorRs 6,300 (400g)Rs 4,560 (2kg)28%
    Bonnie KittenRs 2,400 (0.5 Kg)Rs 1,867 (1.5 Kg)22%
    Royal Canin Fit 32Rs 6,050 (400g)Rs 4,370 (2kg)28%
Only buy a big bag if your cat will finish it within about 6 weeks of opening, and keep it sealed — stale food is no saving.
  3. Measure, don't pour. Overfeeding is the most common hidden cost — and it causes obesity. Use the bag's guide and a measuring cup.
  4. Never run out. Running out means an emergency trip and paying whatever the nearest shop charges — or a sudden food switch that upsets your cat's stomach. A scheduled delivery prevents both.

Switching food without an upset stomach

Mix the new food in gradually over 7–10 days: a quarter new for 2–3 days, then half, then three-quarters, then all new. If your cat vomits, has diarrhoea for more than a day, or stops eating, slow down — and if a cat refuses food for more than 24 hours, read what to do when a cat stops eating or book a video consult with a vet.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best cat food brand in Pakistan?

There is no single best — it depends on budget. On label and price together, Josera Catelux and Royal Canin lead the premium end, Reflex and Nourvet Gold give the best value in the middle (32–33% protein for Rs 1,833/kg or less), and Pawfect and Fluffy are the budget local options (Fluffy doesn't publish its protein figure). Whatever you pick, look for a named meat first on the ingredient list and at least 30% protein on a dry food.

What is the cat food price in Pakistan?

Dry cat food in Pakistan runs from about Rs 708 per kg (Fluffy) to Rs 4,370 per kg (Royal Canin Fit 32) at MatchVet's current prices. A typical 4 kg adult cat eats roughly 1.7 kg a month, so food costs between about Rs 1,200 and Rs 7,450 a month.

Is Royal Canin worth the price?

Royal Canin is consistent, widely researched, and makes breed and medical diets vets rely on (urinary, gastrointestinal, weight). For a healthy adult cat, its Fit 32 label (32% protein, 15% fat) is similar to foods costing far less per kg — you are paying for consistency and research, not a much richer label. For cats on a vet-prescribed diet, it is often worth it.

Is Reflex cat food good?

Reflex and Reflex Plus (Turkey) print 32–33% protein and 14% fat, which is solid for the price. The trade-off is that corn and rice sit high on the ingredient list and the meat is listed as processed or dehydrated chicken protein rather than fresh meat — a point some cat forums criticise. For most healthy adult cats it is a good mid-range food.

Is local Pakistani cat food safe?

Nourvet and Pawfect publish guaranteed analyses in the normal range (30–32% protein); Fluffy publishes its ingredients but not a protein figure we could find. Nourvet Gold's label is as rich as many imported foods. What local brands have less of is independent testing and public owner reviews, so buy sealed bags from a trusted seller and watch your cat's stool, coat and weight for the first month after switching.

What cat food do Pakistani cat owners actually recommend?

In long threads on r/pakistan, Reflex (and Reflex Plus) is the most recommended affordable option, with Josera and Mera named as the step up. The cheapest local brands — Fluffy and Me-O especially — draw heavy criticism, while Nourvet and Pawfect split opinion. Many experienced owners also insist on wet food, or boiled boneless chicken in plain yakhni, alongside kibble because cats drink too little on their own. These are owner opinions, not clinical evidence.

Is loose ('open') cat food a good way to save?

It is cheaper per kg, but loose food is exposed to air, heat and humidity, which makes fats go stale and can grow mould — a real risk in a Pakistani summer. If you buy loose, buy small amounts and store them in an airtight container. A sealed bag on a subscription is usually the safer saving.

How can I save money on cat food?

Three ways: buy the bigger bag of the same food (often 20–30% cheaper per kg), don't overfeed (measure against the bag's feeding guide), and stop paying delivery. MatchVet subscribers in Lahore get free delivery — worth about Rs 200 each time, or Rs 2,400 a year on a monthly schedule.
