Dog & Cat Biopsy Test in Lahore: Is the Lump Cancer?

A biopsy sends a piece of tissue — a lump, a patch of skin, or a mass your vet removed — to a pathologist, who examines it under a microscope. Histopathology gives the most reliable answer to the question every owner asks: is it cancer? It also tells your vet how aggressive a tumour is and whether it was completely removed, which decides what happens next.

What it costs at the lab

These are the lab's own prices. Most clinics in Pakistan don't run tests in-house — they send the sample to a lab like this one and add their own charges, so the figure your clinic quotes is rarely the lab's.

Why vets ask for a biopsy

What it measures

What the biopsy measures
PartWhat it tells you
Tissue typeWhat the lump is actually made of
Benign or malignantWhether it is cancer
GradeHow aggressive a tumour is — it guides treatment and outlook
MarginsWhether the edges of the removed tissue are clean, meaning the whole lump came out

Reading the results — good and bad

Biopsy (histopathology) results and what they can mean
ResultWhat it can mean
Benign, clean marginsThe best outcome — usually nothing more is needed beyond watching for new lumps
Benign, incomplete marginsNot cancer, but it may regrow; your vet may suggest monitoring or further surgery
Malignant, clean marginsCancer, fully removed — your vet discusses checks for spread
Malignant, incomplete margins or high gradeFurther surgery or other treatment is usually discussed
Inflammation or infectionNot a tumour at all — treated as an infection or inflammatory disease
A histopathology report is written for your vet. Ask them to walk you through three lines — the diagnosis, the grade and the margins. Those decide the next step.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a biopsy cost in Lahore?

VETix Animal Health Laboratories charges Rs 5,600 when booked through MatchVet (Rs 8,000 as a walk-in). If your clinic sends the sample to an outside lab, its price usually includes its own collection and handling charges on top — so ask which lab it uses, and compare like with like.

What's the difference between a biopsy and a needle test (cytology)?

Cytology draws a few cells with a needle — quick, cheap and often done in the clinic, but it can miss or misjudge. A biopsy examines a solid piece of tissue and shows how the cells are arranged, which is why it is more reliable for diagnosing and grading cancer.

Should every lump be tested?

Any lump that is removed should be sent for histopathology — it is the only way to know what it was and whether it all came out. A lump still on the body can often be checked with a needle sample first; your vet will advise.

How long do biopsy results take?

Usually several days to a week, because the tissue is fixed, processed and cut into very thin slices before a pathologist reads it.

Kya har gaanth (lump) cancer hoti hai?

Nahi, bohat si gaanthein benign hoti hain, yani cancer nahi. Lekin sirf dekh kar ya chhoo kar pata nahi chalta. Biopsy test hi batata hai ke gaanth kya hai aur kya poori nikal gayi hai.
