Kitten foods compared: price and label

Prices are what each food costs on MatchVet today, converted to price per kg so different bag sizes compare fairly. Kitten formulas run richer than adult ones on purpose — growth needs protein and calories.

Prices: MatchVet catalog, confirmed on WhatsApp before your first delivery. Labels: each brand's published guaranteed analysis for its kitten formula (see sources). Bigger bags cost less per kg — Mera Finest Fit Kitten and Reflex Kitten both come in larger sizes.

Two notes worth knowing. Reflex also sells a plain Kitten 2 kg bag at Rs 1,900/kg — cheaper than Reflex Plus, and the version most owners on a budget buy. And Nourvet, one of the most popular local brands, makes no kitten food at all — only adult formulas — so a kitten needs a different brand.

What's actually in each bag

What it costs to raise one kitten (food only)

A kitten between 2 and 6 months eats roughly 1.5 kg of dry food a month — less by weight than an adult cat, but far more per kilo of body weight.

Owners on r/pakistan describe budgeting around Rs 5,000 a month for one kitten once litter and wet food are counted in. Plan for the vet too: the kitten vaccination course and deworming both start in the first weeks.

Feeding a kitten by age

How to feed a kitten from birth to one year
AgeWhat to feedHow often
0–4 weeksMother's milk, or kitten milk replacer — never cow or buffalo milkEvery 2–4 hours, day and night
4–6 weeksWeaning: kitten kibble softened with warm water, or kitten wet food4–5 tiny meals
6–12 weeksKitten food, dry and/or wet; water always available4 meals a day
3–6 monthsKitten food — the fastest growth phase3 meals a day
6–12 monthsKitten food; appetite starts to settle2–3 meals a day
12 months +Switch to adult food over 7–10 days2 meals a day
Amounts come from the feeding chart on the bag, matched to your kitten's weight — not from a fixed cup. Large breeds like Maine Coons may stay on kitten food past 12 months; ask your vet.

Milk replacer and wet food: what to add, and what it costs

An orphan kitten under four weeks needs a kitten milk replacer, not milk from the fridge and not water with sugar. From four weeks, wet food adds the moisture kibble lacks — the single most useful habit for long-term urinary health.

What Pakistani owners say about kitten food

Owners on r/pakistan argue about kitten food constantly. Paraphrasing the two longest threads (linked in the sources) — these are owner opinions, not clinical evidence:

  • Reflex is the everyday recommendation. One owner who moved from Pawfect to Fluffy and regretted it was told, repeatedly, to buy Reflex instead as the affordable safe option.
  • Mera and Reflex are the two several experienced owners will vouch for, with Mera's Finest Fit line preferred over its Exklusiv line. The labels agree: Finest Fit Kitten leads with poultry protein and prints 38% protein.
  • Josera is the "if you can afford it" pick, especially for kittens with sensitive stomachs.
  • The cheapest local brands draw the most anger, Fluffy and Me-O above all, with owners linking them to urinary problems. That link is anecdotal — see the note below.
  • Nourvet's missing kitten formula trips people up. One owner picked Nourvet on a friend's advice, then found there is no kitten version and had to choose again.
  • Wet food or plain boiled chicken is the common add-on — boneless, in plain yakhni, no salt or spices — because kittens need moisture.

A vet's note. No cat food sold in Pakistan has been recalled or shown in published research to cause disease, and one owner's bad experience cannot prove a food was the cause. What matters for a kitten is simpler and not controversial: feed a complete growth formula with a named meat first, add moisture, weigh your kitten weekly and expect steady gain, and treat a kitten that stops eating for 12 hours as urgent — kittens have almost no reserves. See what to do when a cat stops eating, or ask a vet on video. Disclosure: MatchVet sells many of the brands on this page, including ones owners criticise.

Five mistakes that make kittens ill in Pakistan

  1. Cow or buffalo milk. The most common one, and it causes diarrhoea — which dehydrates a kitten fast.
  2. Roti, rice, daal or spiced leftovers. Cats are carnivores; our food is salty and spiced and gives them nothing they need.
  3. Adult food for a kitten, to use up a bag. It does not meet growth needs.
  4. Loose food bought by the scoop in summer. Heat and humidity turn fats stale and can grow mould. Sealed bags, stored closed, are worth the extra.
  5. Waiting out a sick kitten. Not eating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or a swollen belly in a kitten needs a vet the same day — book a home visit or a video consult.

Switching kitten food without an upset stomach

Change over 7–10 days: a quarter new food for 2–3 days, then half, then three-quarters, then all new. Kittens have delicate stomachs, so a sudden switch usually means diarrhoea. The same method applies at 12 months when you move to adult food — compare your options in best cat food brands in Pakistan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best kitten food in Pakistan?

On label and price together, Mera Finest Fit Kitten is the standout: 38% protein and 20% fat for Rs 2,000 per kg. Bonacibo Kitten matches it on protein, Josera and Royal Canin are the premium picks, Reflex Plus Kitten is the popular mid-range choice, and Pawfect Kitten is the cheapest. Whatever you choose, it must say kitten, growth, or "mother and baby" on the bag — adult food does not meet a kitten's needs.

How much does kitten food cost per month in Pakistan?

A kitten between 2 and 6 months eats roughly 1.5 kg of dry food a month. At MatchVet's current prices that is about Rs 1,850 a month on Pawfect Kitten and about Rs 6,550 on Royal Canin Mother & Babycat. Add wet food or milk replacer, litter, deworming and the kitten vaccine course when you budget.

Can kittens eat adult cat food?

Not as their main diet. Kitten formulas carry more protein and fat, more calories per gram, and added DHA for brain and eye development, with calcium and phosphorus balanced for growing bone. A kitten raised on adult food grows more slowly and can end up deficient. Foods labelled for 'all life stages' are formulated for growth and are fine; plain adult food is not.

Can I give my kitten cow or buffalo milk?

No. Cats lose the ability to digest lactose after weaning, and cow or buffalo milk commonly causes diarrhoea in kittens — dangerous in a small animal that dehydrates quickly. Orphan kittens under 4 weeks need a proper kitten milk replacer, fed warm every 2–4 hours. From about 4 weeks they begin weaning onto kitten food softened with water.

How many times a day should I feed a kitten?

Up to 3 months: four small meals a day. From 3 to 6 months: three meals. From 6 to 12 months: two or three. Kittens have tiny stomachs and huge energy needs, so several small meals beat one or two big ones. Fresh water must always be available.

When should a kitten switch to adult food?

At around 12 months for most cats, changed over 7–10 days by mixing. Large or slow-maturing breeds such as Maine Coons and Persians often stay on kitten food a little longer — ask your vet at the 12-month check.

Billi ke bachay ko kya khilana chahiye?

Kitten ko sirf kitten food dein — bag per 'kitten', 'growth' ya 'mother and baby' likha ho. Gaye ya bhains ka doodh na dein, is se dast lag jaate hain; 4 hafte se chhoti bachi billi ke liye kitten milk replacer istemal karein. Roti, chawal, daal aur masalay wala khana kitten ke liye theek nahi. Din mein 3–4 choti feeds, saaf paani hamesha mojood ho, aur 12 mahine ke baad adult food per shift karein.
