Why dogs get diarrhoea
The common causes in Pakistan, roughly in order:
- Diet change or scavenging — new food, table scraps, bin-raiding, or rich/oily leftovers.
- Worms and parasites — very common here; often the reason for recurring soft stool (see deworming below).
- Infections — bacterial or viral, including parvovirus in unvaccinated pups.
- Stress — travel, boarding, a new home.
Reading the stool
| What you see | Usually points to | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Soft/watery, no blood | Mild upset, diet, stress | Bland diet; monitor 24–48h |
| Jelly-like mucus | Colon irritation (colitis) | Bland diet; vet if it recurs |
| Bright red streaks | Lower-gut bleeding (often colitis) | Vet if persistent or heavy |
| Black, tarry stool | Digested blood from upper gut | See a vet promptly |
| Watery + vomiting, a puppy | Possible parvo | Emergency — vet now |
The bland-diet home fix (mild cases only)
- Withhold food for a few hours (not water).
- Feed bland — plain boiled chicken and rice, no oil/spice/bones — small and frequent for 1–2 days.
- Keep water available; watch for dehydration (tacky gums, tiredness, skin that's slow to spring back).
- Reintroduce normal food gradually.
Never give human anti-diarrhoea tablets to a dog without a vet's say-so — several are toxic, and they can mask a problem that needs treating.
See a vet if…
- Black tarry stool or a lot of blood.
- It lasts more than 48 hours, or keeps coming back.
- It comes with vomiting (see dog vomiting), lethargy, or a bloated belly.
- Your dog is dehydrated, very young, very old, or unvaccinated.
Recurring soft stool often means worms — see worms & deworming schedule. A home-visit vet can examine your dog and take a stool sample without a clinic trip.
Frequently asked questions
What can I give my dog for diarrhoea at home?
For mild diarrhoea in a dog that's otherwise well: withhold food for a few hours, keep water available, then feed a bland diet (plain boiled chicken and rice, no oil or spice) in small portions for 1–2 days before returning to normal food. Don't give human anti-diarrhoea medicines — some are toxic to dogs. If it lasts beyond 48 hours or the dog is unwell, see a vet.
What does blood in dog diarrhoea mean?
Bright red blood or streaks usually come from the lower gut (colitis) and are common with mild upsets, but should still be checked if they persist. Black, tarry stool is digested blood from higher up the gut and is more serious — see a vet promptly. Bloody diarrhoea plus vomiting and lethargy in a puppy is a parvo emergency.
Why does my dog have diarrhoea and mucus?
Mucus (a slimy, jelly-like coating) points to irritation of the colon — often from a diet change, scavenging, stress, or parasites. On its own with a well dog it's usually a mild colitis that settles with a bland diet, but recurring or worsening cases need a vet and often a stool test for worms.
When is dog diarrhoea an emergency?
See a vet urgently if there's black tarry stool or lots of blood, if diarrhoea lasts more than 48 hours, if it comes with repeated vomiting, if your dog is weak, not drinking, or showing signs of dehydration, or if it's an unvaccinated puppy. Dehydration from ongoing diarrhoea is itself dangerous.
Kutte ko dast lag gaye hain — kya karun?
Agar kutta theek lage to kuch ghante khana rok dein, paani dete rahein, phir halka khana (ubla chicken + chawal) dein 1–2 din ke liye. Insano wali dawai na dein. Lekin agar dast mein khoon ho, kaala chipchipa pakhana ho, 2 din se zyada rahein, sath ulti ho, ya kutta sust/dehydrate ho — foran vet ko dikhayen.
