What the colour tells you

Vomiting vs. regurgitation
They look similar but mean different things. Vomiting is active — heaving, drooling, abdominal effort — and brings up partly digested food or bile. Regurgitation is passive — food comes back up effortlessly, often undigested and tube-shaped, soon after eating. Telling your vet which one it is genuinely helps them find the cause, so try to notice the effort involved.
Safe home care (only if your dog is otherwise well)
- Rest the stomach for a few hours — no food.
- Offer small amounts of water (or ice cubes to lick). Don't let them gulp a big bowl.
- Then a small bland meal — plain boiled chicken and rice, no oil, no spice, no bones — in small, frequent portions.
- Return to normal food gradually over a day or two if all is well.
Don't give human anti-vomiting medicines, milk, or oily/spiced food. If you're unsure, a quick vet consult saves guesswork.
Red flags — see a vet now
- Blood (fresh red or coffee-ground) in the vomit.
- Repeated vomiting, or can't keep water down.
- Swollen, hard belly and retching with little coming up — possible bloat (GDV), which is rapidly fatal.
- Weakness, collapse, or a very dull dog.
- Suspected poison or swallowed object (toy, bone, cloth).

When is vomiting an emergency?
Go to a vet urgently if there's blood, if your dog can't keep water down, is vomiting repeatedly, is weak or collapsing, has a swollen hard belly and is retching without bringing anything up (possible bloat/GDV), may have eaten poison or a foreign object, or is an unvaccinated puppy (parvo risk).
What can I feed a dog after vomiting?
Once vomiting has stopped for a few hours and your dog is otherwise well, offer small amounts of a bland diet — plain boiled chicken (no bones, no oil, no spices) with plain boiled rice — in small, frequent portions, then gradually return to normal food over a day or two. Don't give milk, oily, or spiced food.
