Signs an exotic animal needs a vet soon
- Not eating or drinking, or eating much less than normal
- Hiding, staying very still, or not reacting the way it usually does
- Trouble breathing, or discharge from the eyes or nose
- A wound, a swelling, or trouble walking
- Diarrhoea, or a big change in droppings
- Any recent change in its food, housing or temperature, if it's followed by a change in the animal
Before the call

- Have a video of it moving, and photos of the problem area and its droppings.
- Note what it eats, where it's kept, how warm that is, and when the problem started.
- Don't give human medicines or dog and cat products. Doses and safety are very different between species.
- Keep the animal somewhere quiet and secure, and handle it as little as you can.
What a vet can and can't do on a video call
A vet can: watch the animal, look at wounds and droppings, go through its food and housing, advise on what to do next, prescribe where it's safe to, and tell you whether it needs to be seen in person.
A vet can't: examine the animal by hand, take X-rays or run tests, give injections or do surgery. Every owner is told this before booking.
