Signs your bird needs a vet today
- Sitting on the cage floor, or fluffed up with its eyes closed
- Tail moving up and down with every breath, or breathing with its beak open
- Not eating or drinking
- Droppings that have changed colour or gone watery
- A bite, wound, swollen foot or any bleeding
- Falling off the perch, or weakness in a wing or leg
Before the call
- Keep the bird warm and quiet, away from fans, AC and other pets.
- Put food and a shallow dish of water on the cage floor so it doesn't have to climb.
- Don't give human medicines, and don't put oil, haldi or creams on the bird.
- Have a video of the bird moving and a photo of its droppings ready.
- Note what it eats, how old it is, when you got it, and when the problem started.
What a vet can and can't do on a video call
A vet can: watch how your bird breathes, stands and moves, look at wounds, feathers and droppings, go through its diet and cage, prescribe where it's safe to, and tell you whether it needs a clinic.
A vet can't: examine the bird by hand, take X-rays or run tests, give injections or do surgery. Every owner is told this before booking.
