A rat bit a lovebird's foot. Turmeric, oil and a human cream didn't help and the swelling grew. A bird vet guided the owner on video, and she later wrote that the foot was completely fine.

The owner lives in a village in interior Sindh, with no vet or clinic nearby. A rat had bitten her lovebird on the foot about six days before she wrote to us.
She had already tried what she had at home: a mix of turmeric (haldi) and oil, washing the foot with neem water, and a human skin cream at night. After the cream, the swelling grew.
We told her a clinic visit would be better, because a vet on a call can advise but cannot examine. There was no clinic she could reach, and she asked to go ahead on video.
We don't publish medicine names or doses. They were worked out for this animal, and copying them can harm yours.
A few days later the owner wrote back to thank the team. Her words: "foot is completely fine now." This is one bird. We read it as a reason to keep offering video where there's no other option, not as proof that a call can replace a clinic.
Oil and human creams can make a bird worse. Oil mats feathers and traps dirt on a wound, and a bird preens whatever is on its skin, so it swallows it. Clean with saline and ask a vet before putting anything on.
Treat any rat or cat bite as serious, even a small one. Bites carry bacteria deep into a very small foot, and birds hide how unwell they feel. Speak to a vet the same day instead of waiting to see if it settles.
Never copy a dose from another pet. A lovebird weighs about 50 grams. A dose that looks tiny to us can be dangerous, which is why we don't publish the medicines used here. Your vet works it out for your bird.
Emergency? Trouble breathing, seizures, heavy bleeding, not passing urine or poisoning need a clinic now, not a video call.
